
Norma Elia Martinez Rogers, Ph.D, RNN, FAAN
Health Professions
Growing up in public housing, she devoted her life to community service.
Starting as a teacher in the Edgewood Independent School District, she later transitioned into nursing education, specializing in Psychiatric Nursing. During Desert Storm, she served at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, earning Achievement and Commendation Medals.
Holding a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations from the University of Texas Austin, she became the first Latina to attain full tenure as a nursing professor. She retired as the first and only Latina Professor Emeritus in the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing.
Co-founding the non-profit Martinez Street Women Center, she provides support and educational services to women and adolescents, collaborating with the US Western District Court Probation Office to establish a program for federally convicted women under community supervision.
Recognized as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, she recently received the Living Legends award, only the second Latina worldwide to achieve this recognition.
Beyond her professional achievements, she takes pride in being a wife and mother to two sons.
