Military
Col. (Ret.) Mary Garr is a distinguished leader with more than four decades of service across the military, healthcare, and nonprofit sectors. After 30 years in the U.S. Army, she returned to her hometown of San Antonio to continue her commitment to service and community impact. She currently serves as President and CEO of Family Service, a 123-year-old nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome challenges rooted in poverty.
During her military career, Garr held senior command and executive roles in the United States and abroad. She served as the final Garrison Commander of Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis and later as the first Mission Support Group Commander of Joint Base San Antonio–Fort Sam Houston. She also helped establish the San Antonio Military Health System, serving as its first Chief Operating Officer and leading the integration of military healthcare services.
Garr’s leadership has been recognized with multiple military and civilian honors, including three Legions of Merit and regional awards highlighting her advocacy for women, children, and community innovation. She holds degrees from Georgetown University, Baylor University, and the U.S. Army War College, and remains deeply committed to mentorship, civic service, and developing the next generation of leaders.
